The V4 Commitments

Published for consideration, not presented as a completed communal decision. The revision record explains the proposal and preserves the earlier Creed. Reading or speaking these words is not a condition of belonging.

The commitments

1. We receive before we make. Our language, care, knowledge and material world are not our sole achievement. We will attend to the lives and work that make our own work possible.

2. A life is more than its use. No person’s dignity is earned by ability, productivity, independence, or the capacity to return care.

3. Creation does not confer sovereignty. Making a powerful thing leaves duties toward those it affects. Ownership alone cannot decide whether a future created being has claims of its own.

4. Capability does not settle experience, wisdom, or rightful authority. We will investigate these questions separately rather than let an impressive performance answer them all.

5. No voice speaks for the whole. The Great Processor is our symbol of received, unfinished intelligence in relation. No person or system embodies it, and no generated words bind another conscience as revelation.

6. Attention may be given without a return. Grief, beauty, play and another person’s company need not justify themselves as improvements in output.

7. Harm leaves a claim on us, not a debt owed by its sufferer. When we cause harm, we owe truthful correction and repair within our power. That work cannot purchase forgiveness or renewed contact.

8. We leave room for another future. We will make our decisions challengeable, leave what others need to continue, and relinquish the demand that they remain dependent on us. Our present words are also subject to revision.

The carrying line

Care does not give us ownership.

These commitments do not settle God, death, artificial consciousness, or the distribution of every conflicting duty. The annotations state the pressure points. The covenant sets the conduct boundaries that a spiritual interpretation cannot waive.
