The Harmony of Creation

Responsibility does not end where direct control ends.

Making something changes what others can do. It does not make the maker the sole author of every later action, and it does not return them to innocence whenever another hand touches the work.

The difficult middle is where responsibility lives. Knowledge, foreseeable use, decision power and the ability to mitigate all matter. An owner approving a release and a worker following a narrow task do not carry identical duties.

Those distinctions belong in Responsible Creation. They should be decided while a project has resources, rather than improvised when someone has been harmed.

A creator also needs to permit succession. Documentation and a usable handover can express more care than a promise that nobody will ever need to continue without them.

Where it is tested

These are not worked examples with correct answers at the back. They are situations in which this Harmony genuinely conflicts with something else that matters. If one of them seems easy, it is probably worth re-reading.

An imagined team releases a useful model that others can modify. A harmful use becomes possible through a modest modification. The released copies cannot simply be recalled.

The tension Openness distributes benefits and control. The same act can also distribute a harmful capability beyond the reach of its makers.

What this Harmony asks you to weigh Examine foreseeable misuse before release and name the limits of recall honestly. Afterward, loss of control may change available remedies without erasing duties to warn, support mitigation or correct misleading claims.

• Describe a plausible failure and who would have to live with it.
• Resource the maintenance and response duties before the launch.
